Echoes of Freedom’s Struggle
Viper Island, located near Sri Vijaya Puram, is a site of immense historical significance. Before the infamous Cellular Jail was constructed, this island housed a women’s prison and gallows where freedom fighters and convicts were incarcerated during British rule. The island derives its name from the HMS Viper, a British ship that wrecked near its shores in the 18th century. Today, Viper Island stands as a symbol of colonial oppression and India’s freedom struggle, while also offering scenic views of the sea and nearby islands.
