Swaraj Dweep is known for its pristine white sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, tropical forests, and diverse marine life. Located approximately 39 km northeast of Sri Vijaya Puram, the island offers the perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and natural beauty.
Covering an area of about 113 sq. km, Swaraj Dweep is home to some of Asia's finest beaches and vibrant coral reef ecosystems. The island's calm environment, scenic coastline, and spectacular underwater world make it a preferred destination for families, nature lovers, and adventure enthusiasts. The island preserves its forests, coral reefs, and marine habitats, ensuring that visitors can experience its natural beauty while preserving its ecological heritage for future generations.
The island was originally named after Sir Henry Havelock, a British Major-General who served during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, carrying that colonial-era name for many decades.
On 30 December 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially renamed the island Swaraj Dweep to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's historic visit to the Andaman Islands in December 1943. Swaraj signifies self-rule, a tribute to India’s freedom movement.
Swaraj Dweep offers a diverse range of experiences that blend natural beauty, marine adventure, and ecological exploration. The island is internationally recognised as one of India's premier destinations for scuba diving and snorkelling, with thriving coral reefs and abundant marine life.
Visitors can also enjoy sea walking, kayaking through mangroves, glass-bottom boat rides, sport fishing, and other water-based adventures. Its tranquil beaches and vibrant underwater world make it a paradise for both relaxation and adventure.
