Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island )

A Coastal Retreat in the Andaman Islands - Overview

Shaheed Dweep

Shaheed Dweep, formerly known as Neil Island, is one of the most picturesque destinations in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Located approximately 37 km from Sri Vijaya Puram, the island is renowned for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, natural rock formations, and peaceful atmosphere. Offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and simplicity, Shaheed Dweep provides visitors with an opportunity to experience the Andaman Islands beyond the more frequented tourist centres.

Covering a small area, the island can be comfortably explored within one or two days, making it an ideal destination for short island getaways. Often referred to as the "Vegetable Bowl of the Andaman Islands", Shaheed Dweep is known for its fertile agricultural land and significant production of fresh fruits and vegetables that are supplied to neighbouring islands. With regular ferry connectivity from Sri Vijaya Puram and Swaraj Dweep, it forms an integral part of the most popular island tourism circuit in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

History of Shaheed Dweep

  • During the colonial period, it was named Neil Island after Brigadier-General James George Smith Neill, a British military officer associated with the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
  • Recognising its historical significance, the Government of India officially renamed Neil Island as Shaheed Dweep on 30 December 2018, commemorating the 75th anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's historic visit and connection to India's freedom movement.
